This Weeks Doctor Who - The Empty Child

the best so far, but still think the editing is a bit off they seem to show people walking around a lot with that c ra p music playing too loud, don't get me wrong i love the new doctor who and its officially the only thing i watch on tv apart from 'have i got news for you'... but this did still got the hair on the back off my neck standing on end (and i seem to be getting a lot more hair on the back of my neck these days) and I think was better than 'darlek' as this seemed too short where as 'darlek' seemed padded out... what was all that torturing the doctor all about, he seemed to get over it and forgive very quickly... cant wait to next week... i hope i can manage to not read end spoilers for the end of the series over the next few weeks.............

INFERNAL DEVICES

just finished reading infernal devices by Philip Reeve, part three in what now looks to be a four part adventure that started with 'Mortal Engines', where we were introduced to a distant future where giant wheeled cities prowled the the hunting grounds gobbling up the smaller suburbs, and 'Predators Gold', where the two hero's: tom natsworthy and hester shaw, returned abroad their airship to face an ice city, a band of 'lost boy' burglars and a increasingly vicious war between the wheeled cities and new fanatical splinter group from the anititracton league named the the green storm...

sounds complicated?

...it isn't really. the great thing about this series of books is that it is so full of amazing ideas where Reeve really explores all the possibilities in his amazingly complex imagined world but at the same time he never looses track of the story, pulling you along on a fast paced white knuckle ride

...and the twist and turns of the story really get going in this one. set sixteen years after the last adventure Tom and Hester have given up there life of adventure and have settled with the survivors of the great ice city of Anchoridge safely hidden from the rest of the vicious world on the supposedly dead continent of America. But it isn't long before some old 'friends' turn up looking for a a piece of 'old tech' from before the 60 second war and end up taking Tom and Hesters only daughter with them.

As much as i loved all the non stop action, (I read this in almost one sitting), the amazing breth of ideas and the hilarious character and vehicle names (look out for the 'visible pantyline') there were a few niggles that stop me from giving this 5 out of 5: some of the coincidences in the this part were a bit beyond belief and too many people keep coming back from the dead ?!?, also had a problem with the character using the words mum, dad, mummy and daddy, don't know why, i just thought 'mother' and 'father' would sound more 'right, but who am i to say how people are going to talk in the distant future...

Part three felt to me like the 'empire strikes back' of the the books i have read so far, thing don't go well for all of our heros and friends and families are split up. don't expect a happy ending but do expect to be desperate to see how it all ends...

4.5/5

bring on the final part!!

UPDATE

well, its been a busy week... 2nd aikido lesson went well, not so many brakefalls so the bruising has subsided.
Election was interesting, Labour lost seats as i predicted but more went to the torys than i wanted, but the lib dems seem to be a a strong position, lets hope that labour voters don't move back when bair leaves... anyway enough of the boring politics... more sci-fi

went to see hitchhikers guide with the nerd family cleaves + james... enjoyed it a lot but zaphod was very funny but it did feel a bit like hitchikers lite for americans, but i think that having read books, listened to the radio show and watched the tv show, i knew too much and was just seeing the bits they missed rather than enjoying the bits they put in... think hammer and tongs did a great job, felt like a terry gilliam film in a good way, cant think what they could possibly do as a follow up... don't know if a hitchikers guide sequel would work, but its doing well in the sates so you never know... and zaphod needs to get his other head back somehow.

anyway enough from me for now... catch you all a later

EXTERMINATE

well the Darleks are back... or at least A Darlek is back... or was... or will be...

darm those pesky time travel stories!

anyway the latest episode of doctor who was great. When the darlek was sitting in the dark when the doctor first came into 'rescue' it all the hairs o the back of my neck stood on end...

i also started aikido last night at the sports centre. All i did in my first lesson was learn how roll with the falls which entailed rolling around a lot on the crash mats... sounds easy but i am soooo bruised and stiff today you would imagine i went through a full blown battle. felt like i had a proper work out though and am looking forward to Thursday when i put my self though the punishment all over again (that is if i can get their okay, can hardly walk today)... on thing for sure, it helped with my insomnia i didn't awake up until 9 today! great stuff.

My sister tammy is soon to be going off to India for a month or so with her work so expect a link to a blog site i am making for her to appear here soon...

laters...
